Dantes Helvete

Dante, i sitt verk Den gudomliga komedin, placerade Profeten Muhammad och hans hängivna efterföljare, Ali ibn Abi Talib, i sitt skapta Helvete:

His guts hung between his legs and displayed his vital organs, including that wretched sack which converts to shit whatever gets conveyed down the gullet.

As I stared at him he looked back and with his hands pulled his chest open, saying, ”See how I split open the crack in myself! See how twisted and broken Mohammed is! Before me walks Ali, his face cleft from chin to crown, grief–stricken.”

Vad kommer Dante att säga till sitt försvar om detta på Domens Dag när han ställs inför Världarnas Herre, då Helvetet görs synligt och hans handlingars våg placeras inför honom? Vad kommer hans ursäkt att vara?

If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], ”Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are now certain.”  (32:12)
